To whom it may concern: Every year, the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” – a prime research Institution internationally recognized – sponsors a limited number of fellowships for foreign students applying for a PhD degree in engineering and material science. Fellowships are limited and assigned on a competitive basis. We are currently considering students wishing to enroll in our Ph.D. program on Materials For Health, Environment, And Energy (code R90) at University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy. Desired candidates should have an inclination (or willingness) towards experimental activities and the abilityto work in a strongly multicultural environment. ANNOUNCEMENT OF DOCTORAL (PhD) POSITIONS RESERVED TO CITIZENS OF NON-EUROPEAN UNION NATIONS Academic year 2009/2010

1. Number of positions The Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa announces a competition based on candidates’ degrees and work to date for the academic year 2009/2010 for 10 doctoral (PhD) positions, reserved to university graduates from non-European Union nations.

Applications are invited for the following subject areas in the Faculty of Sciences: Molecular Biophysics; Molecular Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Condensed Matter Physics; Mathematics; Mathematics for Industry and Finance; Neurobiology.

2. Admission Requirements: It is strongly recommended that candidates to PhD programs in the Faculty of Sciences take the “GRE – Subject Test” administered by the ETS (see The GRE Tests)

3. Application and deadline The application must arrive to the Scuola Normale no later than 30 June 2009

4. General Rules Doctoral programs last for three years. Their legal and economic start date is: 1 January 2010 for candidates admitted to the Faculty of Sciences.

5. Students’ Rights From 16 October of each year to 15 October of the following year for competition winners in the Faculty of Arts, and from 1 January to 31 December of each year for competition winners in the Faculty of Sciences, students have the right to free meals (value approximately €7,700.00/year) and housing, with the exclusion of vacation periods indicated on the academic calendar established by the Board of Directors.

They will also receive a fellowship that is determined annually by the Board of Directors. For the 2009/2010 academic year the fellowship will be €9,200.00 gross/year. The distribution of the fellowship, in 12 end-of-month payments, is dependent on the fulfillment of academic obligations by the students. In case of need it is possible to request an advance of the first installment only. Said fellowship is subject to the fiscal regulations in force concerning university scholarships.

In case of temporary scarcity of rooms, as a provisional measure, doctoral students will receive an allowance of €3,800.00 gross/year for lodging outside the Scuola Normale. Doctoral students can request reimbursement of travel costs at the beginning and end of doctoral studies up to a limit of €1,000.00 for each journey. Travel costs indicated in the reimbursement request must be documented. The Faculty Council can authorize students’ participation in research and study activities outside the Scuola Normale. Documented requests will be screened by a Committee nominated by the Faculty Council.

Degree Requirements Applications for the doctoral positions are accepted from candidates, regardless of gender, age and nationality, who have an Italian “laurea specialistica” or “laurea magistrale” in compliance with Ministerial Decree no. 509 of 3.11.1999 as amended, a university degree of the previously enforced Italian regulations, or an equivalent academic degree obtained abroad.

The degree in scientific areas will be a preferential title. Applicants who have a foreign degree which has not been officially recognized as equivalent to an Italian degree must submit a request for equivalence in the application.

Grants The gross amount of the scholarship is Euro 13,638.47 per year 1. Grants are normally paid bi-monthly and in advance, with the exception of undue payments in case the student is expelled or suspended. Grants cannot be combined with other scholarships, except those awarded by national or foreign scientific institutes deemed appropriate for the research activities carried out by the doctoral student. The scholarship will be increased by 50% for research periods spent abroad that are authorized by the Head of the School or by the Doctoral School Committee.
